Listening to
HOGSTUL is similar to watching a horror opus with an
extreme metal soundtrack. During its jurney, there will be few
moments in which you can breathe, you must keep your attention
so as not to lose details, because in them exist the treasure of
this work.
“Nitru”
(02:05) is the instrumental that opens this second album and goes from
less to more, drawing horrifying musical forms that driving to a
perfect ending for “We The Dark” to start.
This one takes us by surprise, a fast start over gloomy blankets
of keyboards and the work on the voices is great, goes beyond
their previous debut album “Ominous Fragmenta Tuptdalr”, because
it is played with more variations.
"The Scorn
Agitator” (10:09) has a more sinister touch, at times the keyboards
remind me of the most sophisticated EMPEROR era and the guitar
gives a special vertigo in its arrangements, a lot
Norwegian black metal essence here, towards minute 9:00 some majestic piano
melodies appear, but without moving away the HOGSTUL universe.
“A Below
Seven Layers” (19:09) demands our ears to another level, it goes
beyond a conventional path. To be able to decipher all the twists
and turns that Kjetil has created here is a challenge and also,
to assimilate that his inventive mind seems to have no end.
This can also be seen on his other band PROFANE BURIAL
orchestrations contribution, for example. The song is about "hell" and the
lyrics alternate between the English-Norwegian language and goes
through several stages, reaching a break around 12:00 minute,
where a small melodic and nostalgic parenthesis appears, very
successful. Another detail is the third reactivation around 15:30
when everything seems to start over but obviously, with changes
in the arrangements.
Instrumental “Kova”
(02:11) is a tribute to the Norwegian river of the same name,
and it has been its beautiful landscapes that have given to
Kjetil extra inspiration to compose not only this last one,
also all this epic work from the solitude of the mountains.
independently
of musical preferences, an elaborate album like "Telemark
Horror" needs to be listened to many times before giving an
impromptu review about a major work. Mixed and mastered at
StemCellar again, this material rises one step above than the
debut "Ominous Fragmenta Tuptdalr". This first release
will be available in cassette format via Screaming Skull Records
and Blodbuse Distribution.
Recently Kjetil
Ytterhus has announced that this will be the last album under
the name HOGSTUL and the new name for possible future releases
will be HAVOCKING.
Our “dark wish” is to hope to continue enjoying jobs like this
in the future!!!
I am the
